Still Life – charcoal & pastels

This drawing was done using black charcoal and white pastels.

This drawing took about 2.50 hours.

The assignment here was to shade the closer items lighter and the farther items darker, regardless of the actual highlights and shadows.

I imagined that the viewer’s eye as the light source.

I have discovered that I really love drawing with charcoal and pastels!

Still Life Drawings

Both Buddha drawings were done at home and each took about 15-20 minutes.

The Still Life of the cones, sphere, and cube were done in class, and took  about 2 hours.

I always enjoy drawing objects that I like. I understand why we start out with basic shapes and object. However, the task of drawing is much more pleasurable to me if like the subject of my drawing. In some cases you will be staring at the object for hours. It should be fun! :) Practice makes perfect! Try it!

Gesture Sketches

Gesture drawings show the internal dynamic of the thing you are drawing. If you have a friend or family member who can pose for you, ask them to take an active pose, and to change poses continually after one minute each. If you don’t have a model available, go somewhere where you can see people moving about – a shopping center, a park, a construction site? In the worst case, draw figures moving on television.

Here are some of my 1 minute Gesture drawings I did in class and at home. The figures were in class, and the cats were at home. :)

Try this! It is fun!
